Colonial History
The street names of Castlebar reflect the colonial past of the town. From the first Norman castle through to the Plantations and the era of Landlordism various outside forces have shaped it's history. However, Castlebar has also been the stage for various acts of rebellion against colonialism. The picture to the left depicts the 'Races of Castlebar' where a combined Franco-Irish force chase the retreating British army during the rebellion of 1798.
