This street’s name is of unknown origin. It is located in ‘Knockthomas’ townland. The street runs uphill northward of the town. The name is derived from an Irish name leading one to believe that it is very old in construction. The name is anglicised from the Irish ‘Cnoc’ which means ‘hill’; Thomas’s Hill. There is no known Thomas Bingham so the street could be named after an Anglo-Norman settler, before the arrival of the British administration. There is no notable Thomas mentioned in the history of Castlebar.
